Two things to know about Santorini before you book. First: the famous photo — white village, blue domes, caldera dropping into the Aegean — was almost certainly taken in Oia, in the last 90 minutes before sunset, from a stretch of pavement now policed by donkeys and selfie-sticks. Second: that photo accounts for maybe 10% of the island. The other 90% includes a working wine country (Assyrtiko vines pruned into low baskets to survive the Cyclades wind), a black-sand beach district at Perissa where rooms are a third the price of Oia, and the archaeological site of Akrotiri — a 3,600-year-old Minoan town buried by the same eruption that gave the island its shape. Santorini is genuinely beautiful and genuinely overcrowded. The trick is choosing where on the island you stay (not Oia), what time of day you photograph (not 7pm), and how long you give it (three nights is plenty; five is a mistake).
Oia is the famous village — the blue domes, the narrow alleyways, the sunset crowds. It's quieter, more upscale, and home to the best hotels on the island. Fira is the main town: more restaurants, more nightlife, more affordable. Pyrgos is a third option if you want to escape the tourist trail entirely — medieval, quiet, and 10 minutes from everywhere by car. For a caldera-view hotel, you have to stay in Oia or Fira.
TravelBuzzy Tips
Sunset in Oia is packed — arrive 2 hours early or watch from Imerovigli for a similar view with fewer people
Fira is better for budget travellers — Oia hotels command a significant premium for the view
Rent an ATV for a day to reach the less-visited beaches on the east coast
The peak season runs July–August and is genuinely overwhelming: cruise ships dock daily, the narrow paths of Oia become shoulder-to-shoulder, and hotels charge their highest rates. May, June, and September are objectively better months — still warm, beautiful, but noticeably calmer and 30–40% cheaper. October is the last reliable warm month and increasingly popular. Winter (November–April) sees most businesses close.
TravelBuzzy Tips
Book hotels 6+ months ahead for July–August — the best caldera-view rooms sell out by February
May is ideal: fewer tourists, wildflowers everywhere, sea warm enough to swim
Shoulder season deals can cut hotel costs in half compared to August
Santorini is small — the whole island is about 30km from end to end. The public bus (KTEL) is cheap and connects Fira to Oia, Perissa, and Kamari. Taxis are expensive and scarce in peak season. Renting an ATV ($25–35/day) or car ($40–60/day) gives the most freedom and is how locals navigate. Donkeys are still used on the famous steps from Fira to the old port — tourists are allowed to ride them, though it's discouraged by animal welfare groups.
Santorini's volcanic soil produces distinctive local products: the island's cherry tomatoes are world-famous, the white eggplant is unlike anything grown elsewhere, and the assyrtiko white wine is genuinely one of Greece's best varieties. Splurging at a caldera-view restaurant once is worth it for the experience. For everyday eating, the village squares away from the main tourist drag serve much better food at half the price.
TravelBuzzy Tips
Tomatokeftedes (tomato fritters) are the must-try local dish — every taverna does them differently
Santo Wines winery has one of the best caldera views on the island and a free tasting
Avoid restaurants right on the caldera edge in Oia — you're paying for the view, not the food

The Greek 'yes' (Ναι) sounds like the English word 'nay' — remember this or you'll do the opposite of what you intend!
A few words in the local language go a long way — locals genuinely appreciate the effort.

The caldera path from Fira to Oia is a stunning 10km walk (3–4 hours) along the clifftop — one of the best ways to explore the island. Wear good shoes and go early.
Taxis are scarce in high season and can't be hailed on the street in Oia. Book your return taxi in advance or you may wait a long time.
Santorini and Greece generally are very safe destinations. Crime rates are low and the island is well-equipped for tourists.
Tap water: ✗ Not safe to drink
Tap water in Santorini is technically drinkable but has a strong mineral taste due to desalination. Most locals and visitors use bottled water.
PickpocketingLow risk
Rare on Santorini compared to mainland Athens. Stay alert in crowded areas in Fira and Oia.
Sunstroke / heatstrokeTake care
Summers are extremely hot (35°C+). Drink water constantly, wear a hat, and avoid midday sun in July–August.
ATV / scooter accidentsModerate
ATVs are popular but the roads are narrow and winding. Accidents are common — drive slowly.
Cliff edge hazardsModerate
The caldera path has unfenced edges. Be careful, especially at dusk or if you've had wine at dinner.
Sea urchinsLow risk
Present on rocky beaches — wear water shoes on volcanic beaches like Kamari and Perissa.
Violent crimeLow risk
Very rare. Santorini is one of the safest tourist destinations in Europe.
Santorini's food is deeply rooted in the sea, the volcanic soil, and the Aegean sun. The island produces unique ingredients — cherry tomatoes, white aubergines, capers, and the famous Vinsanto wine — all shaped by the volcanic terrain.
🍅
Tomatokeftedes Must try Veggie
Crispy Santorini tomato fritters made with the island's famous tiny, intensely sweet cherry tomatoes, mint and feta. Unmissable appetiser.
🫘
Fava Must try Veggie
Yellow split pea purée drizzled with olive oil and lemon — a Santorini speciality that's been made here for 3,500 years.
🐟
Fresh Grilled Fish Must try
Octopus, sea bream, and sea bass grilled simply with olive oil and lemon. Best at a port-side taverna in Ammoudi Bay below Oia.
🍆
Moussaka
Layers of aubergine, minced lamb, and béchamel sauce baked until golden. A Greek classic done properly.
🥙
Souvlaki / Gyros Must try
Pork or chicken in pitta with tzatziki, tomato and onion. The best fast food in the world — find a local gyros spot rather than a tourist one.
🍆
Santorini White Aubergine Must try Veggie
A uniquely sweet, almost seedless aubergine grown only on Santorini's volcanic soil. Often served stuffed with cheese.
🍯
Honey & Thyme Cheese (Chloro) Veggie
Soft fresh cheese drizzled with thyme honey — an extraordinary combination unique to the Cyclades.
The caldera-view restaurants in Oia charge 3–4x the price of identical food 5 minutes inland. Pay for the view once — but eat your everyday meals at inland tavernas for far better quality and value.
The benchmark caldera-view property in Oia. Cave-style suites carved into the cliff face, infinity pool, private terraces, and the island's best breakfast.
Well-priced Fira hotel with caldera views, a full spa, and pool. Better value than anything comparable in Oia, with a 15-minute walk to the main sights.
