Auckland

The City of Sails, built across fifty extinct volcanoes

CLBy Camille Laurent · Senior Travel Editor

Auckland is built across and around fifty-odd extinct volcanoes on an isthmus so narrow that you can see two different bodies of water — the Pacific to the east, the Tasman Sea to the west — from some of its own hilltops, and New Zealanders outside the city treat this fact with the polite indifference locals reserve for a rich relative. It's the country's only real city — population-wise it dwarfs the rest of the North Island combined — a working port and business capital rather than the postcard version of New Zealand that Queenstown sells, and it's better for that: excellent Pacific and Asian food shaped by the largest Polynesian population of any city on Earth, a genuinely good harbourfront dining scene around Wynyard Quarter, and Waiheke Island's vineyards forty minutes away by ferry. Most visitors give Auckland one night before racing south to the 'real' New Zealand — a mistake, but an understandable one, since Auckland's real strength is as a base for day trips as much as the city itself.

The CBD and Viaduct Harbour form the compact commercial and dining core, walkable and ferry-connected to everything else. Ponsonby and Kingsland are the inner-city neighbourhoods with the best independent cafés, bars, and boutique shopping. Devonport, a 12-minute ferry ride across the harbour, is a low-key Victorian seaside village with volcanic cone walks and harbour views back to the skyline. Waiheke Island, 40 minutes by ferry, is technically part of Auckland but functions as a full day-trip (or overnight) destination in its own right.

TravelBuzzy Tips

Devonport is an easy half-day trip by ferry and gives the best skyline photo of Auckland from across the harbour

Ponsonby Road is the best single street for dinner — book ahead on weekends

Climb one of the volcanic cones (Mount Eden or One Tree Hill) for a free 360° view of the whole isthmus
