Bora Bora is geometrically improbable. The island is the eroded core of a 7-million-year-old volcano (Mount Otemanu, 727m), surrounded by an absolutely circular lagoon, surrounded by a string of motu (low coral islets) where the resorts sit. The shape is so distinct it's recognisable from satellite imagery without labels. Two things determine the cost of a trip: the resort, and the season. The luxury overwater villas at Four Seasons, St Regis, and InterContinental Le Moana run $1,800–4,500 per night, and they do deliver — the lagoon is genuinely the calmest and clearest you'll swim in, the snorkelling from your villa is real, and the food at the better resorts is shockingly good. But there's a much cheaper Bora Bora most visitors don't know about: pension-style guesthouses on the main island (Vaitape side) at $200–350/night, with day passes to the lagoon resorts for snorkelling. November–April is rainy season (less expensive, occasional storms); May–October is dry (peak prices). Tip almost nobody mentions: French Polynesia uses the CFP franc, not the euro, and many small vendors only accept cash — bring some on arrival.
Bora Bora pioneered the overwater bungalow concept in 1961, and the island remains its finest expression. The best overwater rooms have glass-floor panels for watching reef life, direct lagoon access via steps into calm, clear water, and sunrise/sunset views across the lagoon to Mount Otemanu. The Conrad Bora Bora Nui and Four Seasons have the finest overwater products. The St Regis (now Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts) has the largest lagoon. TravelBuzzy Tips
Request a water bungalow with Mount Otemanu views — the angle matters enormously for photography
The clearest water for snorkelling is from the eastside bungalows at the Four Seasons and Conrad
Sunrise-facing overwater rooms are 10–15% cheaper with equally dramatic light
The dry season (May–October) is when Bora Bora is at its finest: lower humidity, less cloud, and calmer lagoon conditions. July–August are the most popular months — school holidays worldwide. May, June, and September offer the best combination of good weather and manageable crowds. The wet season (November–April) brings more rain, higher humidity, and notably cheaper rates (30–50% less). Some rainy-season storms can be intense, but sunny periods are still the majority.
TravelBuzzy Tips
July 14 (Bastille Day/Heiva festival) is spectacular — traditional dance, outrigger racing on the lagoon
September and October are exceptional: post-peak quiet, warm sea, still dry season
November–April wet season prices can make a previously unaffordable resort possible
The standard resort experience starts at $600–800/night before food and activities. But the island has another mode: pension guesthouses on the main island and motus, accessible by small boat ferries (the only public transport). Chez Rosine, Rohotu Fare Lodge, and Motu Tapu offer authentic Polynesian guesthouses for $120–200/night with breakfast. Renting a bicycle ($10/day) to circumnavigate the main island, snorkelling from public beach access points, and eating at the snack bars on Vaitape are all genuinely excellent experiences that cost $20–50/day.
TravelBuzzy Tips
Stay in a pension guesthouse and book a half-day snorkel tour — you see the same lagoon for 10% of the price
Bicycle around the main island (32km) in a single morning — the views are extraordinary
The 4WD mountain tour to the WWII gun emplacements above Fitiiu Point is the best land activity
Bora Bora's lagoon is one of the finest snorkelling environments on earth — manta rays, lemon sharks, eagle rays, and blacktip reef sharks are commonly seen in the shallow sandy areas. The Coral Garden (snorkel by boat) is excellent. Deep-sea fishing, kitesurfing (the lagoon is ideal), and outrigger canoe tours all operate from the main island. The interior of the main island has excellent 4WD tours. Swimming with sharks at the Sand Bora sand bar is a genuinely unmissable experience — the sharks are completely harmless in the shallow water.
TravelBuzzy Tips
The shark and ray snorkel tour in the lagoon is Bora Bora's single best activity — book via any pension
Manta rays are most reliably seen at Manta Point on the eastern barrier reef, May–July
The helicopter tour over the lagoon is expensive ($300–400) but gives the definitive perspective
