Overwater bungalows and the clearest water on earth
The Maldives sells a single image — overwater villa, sunrise over impossibly clear water — and it delivers on that image more reliably than almost any destination on earth. What it doesn't tell you on the brochure: the country is 1,200 islands across 26 atolls, the average natural-ground elevation is 1.5 metres above sea level, and most of what tourists experience is one resort per island. That last fact matters. A Maldives stay is not a 'trip' in the conventional sense — there's no town to wander into for dinner, no morning markets, no taxi to a neighbouring beach. You pick one resort and you live there for 4–7 nights. Pick well. The mid-range tier ($350–700/night) has caught up dramatically with the luxury tier in the last five years; the local-island guesthouse scene (Maafushi, Thoddoo, $80–150/night) has opened a budget Maldives that genuinely didn't exist before 2009. The classic $1,500/night overwater experience is still extraordinary — but it is now one of three legitimate ways to do this country, not the only one.

Book on KlookOverwater bungalows are the iconic Maldives image, but they're not always the better option. They're more expensive, more exposed to wind, and offer less privacy on some resorts. Beach villas often have better direct snorkelling, more space, and garden privacy. The sweet spot is a water bungalow with direct lagoon steps — you get the overwater experience with direct water access. Sunrise-facing overwater rooms are slightly cheaper than sunset-facing ones at most resorts.

💡 Required for most atolls. Stunning views — the best arrival experience in travel. Book with your resort.
💡 For atolls within 90 min of Malé. Transfers are nearly always arranged by the resort — confirm when booking.
💡 Flies to outer atolls where seaplanes can't land at night. Maldivian Airlines operates most routes.
💡 Budget option — public ferries from Malé to nearby inhabited islands like Maafushi. Very slow.
Seaplanes only fly during daylight hours. If your flight arrives late, you'll stay in Malé overnight and transfer the next morning — factor this into your first night's booking.
Seaplane and speedboat transfers can be cancelled in bad weather. Build buffer days into your trip and get travel insurance that covers disrupted transfers.
Resort islands are extremely safe — crime is virtually zero on private atolls. Local inhabited islands require more cultural awareness but are generally safe.
Tap water: ✗ Not safe to drink
Do not drink tap water outside of resorts. Resorts provide desalinated or filtered water. On local islands, use sealed bottled water only.
Strong currents, coral, jellyfish, and sea urchins are present. Always dive/snorkel with a guide and check conditions.
UV levels are extreme near the equator. Apply reef-safe SPF 50+ every 2 hours — especially on boat days.
The heat and humidity are intense. Drink more water than you think you need.
Visiting local islands in revealing clothing or with alcohol can cause serious offence and may be illegal.
Speedboat transfers can be rough in bad weather. Always wear a life jacket — they should be provided.
Crime against tourists on resort islands is extremely rare.
Maldivian cuisine is built on tuna, coconut, and chilli — the three pillars of island cooking. On resort islands, international cuisine dominates. On local islands, you'll find some of the most distinctive and underrated food in the Indian Ocean.
Shredded smoked tuna with coconut, onion and chilli — the classic Maldivian breakfast served with roshi (flatbread). Try it on a local island.
Clear tuna broth served with rice, lime, chilli and onion on the side — the national dish and the soul of Maldivian cooking.
Short-eat pastries filled with tuna, egg and cabbage — a Maldivian take on a South Asian samosa. Sold at tea shops.
A thick, deeply savoury paste made from reduced tuna broth. Spread on roshi or stirred into rice — an acquired taste but deeply traditional.
Most resorts run nightly beach BBQs with freshly caught lobster, reef fish, and prawns. The quality is exceptional — often the best meal of a trip.
A mild, golden tuna curry cooked with coconut milk and spices. Gentler than Sri Lankan curries — accessible and delicious.
Round fried dumplings stuffed with smoked tuna and coconut. Sold at tea shops alongside sweet tea.
If you're staying at a resort, build at least one day trip to a local inhabited island into your trip. The food is better, cheaper, and more authentic than anything served poolside.
