Bamboo groves, geisha districts, and a thousand temples
Kyoto is the most over-touristed city in Japan, and the reason is that it is genuinely the best version of Japan. It was the imperial capital for 1,074 years (until 1868), it has 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, and the Allied Forces deliberately spared it from WWII bombing because of its cultural significance. The challenge is that 50 million tourists visit each year, concentrated in roughly 6 districts and 10 temples — meaning Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari, and the Arashiyama bamboo grove are full from 9am to 5pm in any season. The city has begun to push back: as of 2024, the Gion district restricts non-resident pedestrians on private side streets, and several temples have introduced timed-entry tickets. Two strategies that actually work. First: be the first person at the temple. Fushimi Inari at 6am and Kiyomizu-dera at 7am are the empty, cinematic versions of these places. Second: explore the temples nobody mentions — Tenryū-ji, Daitoku-ji, Honen-in, Ryōan-ji at the off-hour. Stay in a machiya (traditional townhouse) in the Higashiyama or Nishijin district, not a chain hotel near Kyoto Station. Eat kaiseki at least once.

Book on KlookDowntown (Kawaramachi/Gion) is the most convenient base — restaurants, transport, and within walking distance of Gion, Pontocho, and the Nishiki Market. Gion is the geisha district — atmospheric at night, best explored on foot after 7pm when the streets quieten. Arashiyama in the west holds the bamboo grove, Tenryuji temple garden, and the monkey park. Higashiyama is the best temple-crawl district — Kiyomizudera, Sanjusangendo, the Philosopher's Path in cherry blossom season. Fushimi Inari (the thousand torii gates) is in the south.
