Phuket

Limestone cliffs, turquoise bays, and world-class island hopping

Phuket is the size of Singapore (543 km²), and the choice of where on the island you stay matters more than almost any other Thai destination decision. The west coast has all the beaches; the south end (Rawai, Nai Harn) is quieter and locally inhabited; the north (Bang Tao, Surin) is where the luxury resorts have clustered since 2015; the centre is jungle and rubber plantation. The single mistake first-time visitors make is staying in Patong. Patong is the entirety of the bad reputation — the Bangla Road bar scene, the relentless tuk-tuk hassle, the soulless beachfront. Almost every other beach on the island is better. Karon and Kata, 10 minutes south, are the family-and-couple version with the same beach. Kamala, north of Patong, is where the locals send their friends. Surin and Bang Tao, further north, are where the boutique villa scene has grown. The real Phuket isn't the island itself — it's the launchpad. Phang Nga Bay (the James Bond limestone karst landscape) is 90 minutes north by speedboat; the Similan Islands (the best diving in Thailand) need 2 nights on a liveaboard; Phi Phi is doable as a day trip but the overnight is much better. Two nights on the island, three days on the boats around it.

Patong is the famous party beach — loud, neon, full of Bangla Road bars, and absolutely not for everyone. Kata and Karon are more family-friendly and have the best surf. Kamala is mid-range and increasingly boutique. Surin is the prestige beach — upscale beach clubs, quieter, and the best swimming. Bang Tao (Laguna resort area) is where the high-end five-star hotels sit. Old Phuket Town (the east side) is the cultural heart of the island — stunning Sino-Portuguese architecture, great coffee shops, and almost no beach tourists.

TravelBuzzy Tips

Stay on the west coast for beaches but visit Phuket Town for the authentic culture

Surin and Kamala give the best balance of quality beach, good food, and manageable crowds

Patong is worth one night for the spectacle — but don't stay there for a week

June is cheap for a reason — weather is not ideal. If budget matters more than sunshine, it can still be a rewarding trip with fewer tourists.
