Rome

The Colosseum, the Vatican, and the world's best pasta

Rome is, statistically, an unfair amount of city per square kilometre. The historic centre alone — about 2.5 km² — contains the Pantheon (functioning since 126 AD), the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, four major churches, and the entirety of the original Capitoline. The Vatican is a separate country across the river. The Colosseum and the Forum are a 15-minute walk south. Almost no one tells you the corollary, which is that this density makes Rome an exceptionally walkable city — you don't need a hotel near a metro, you need a hotel inside the centro storico, ideally Monti or near Campo de' Fiori. Two practical things that change the visit. The Roma Pass (€32, three days) is genuinely worth it — skip-the-line at most major sites and unlimited public transport. And the city's restaurant economy has a sharp cliff at €15 per main dish — below that, you're eating tourist menus; above, you're eating Italian. Stick to neighbourhoods Romans actually live in (Trastevere, Testaccio, Prati) for dinner. Lunch can be cheaper.

The Historic Centre (around the Pantheon and Campo de' Fiori) is the most central, atmospheric, and expensive. Trastevere is the most romantic — ivy-covered buildings, excellent trattorias, and a neighbourhood feel that the centre lacks. Prati (near the Vatican) is quieter and more affordable, excellent for Vatican-day bases. Monti is Rome's hippest neighbourhood — good restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Testaccio is where Romans eat — no-tourist-markup trattorias and a famous food market.

TravelBuzzy Tips

Book Colosseum and Vatican Museums at least 2–3 weeks ahead — sold-out dates are common

Staying in Trastevere means a 25–30 minute walk to most major sights — worth it for the ambience

Monti is the best value neighbourhood for eating and drinking with a genuinely local crowd
