Kuala Lumpur

Petronas towers, street food, and Southeast Asia's most underrated capital

Kuala Lumpur has a branding problem: it's wedged on itineraries between Singapore and Bangkok as a one-or-two-night stopover, when it's genuinely one of the best-value, most underrated capitals in Asia. The Petronas Towers get the postcard, but the more interesting story is what surrounds them — a city where Malay, Chinese, and Indian communities each built their own dense, distinct neighbourhoods within walking distance of each other, and where the food scene reflects three completely different culinary traditions eaten from the same hawker stalls. KL is also flatly one of the cheapest major cities in the region for five-star quality: a rooftop-pool hotel with Petronas views that would run $400+ in Singapore costs a third of that here. The catch is the equatorial climate — hot and humid essentially year-round with rain most afternoons, so 'best time to visit' here is really about which months rain the least, not which months are dry.

The Golden Triangle (KLCC, Bukit Bintang) is the modern commercial core — Petronas Towers, malls, and the bulk of international hotel chains. Chinatown (Petaling Street) and adjacent Merdeka Square hold the colonial and Chinese-heritage architecture, plus the best-value hostels. Bangsar and Brickfields (Little India) are quieter, food-focused neighbourhoods worth a visit even if you don't stay there. Most first-timers should base in the Golden Triangle for walkability to the towers and monorail access to everywhere else.

TravelBuzzy Tips

KLCC Park at the base of the Petronas Towers is free and open until 10pm — the best (and free) angle for tower photos is from the park fountain at dusk

Bukit Bintang's Jalan Alor night market is the single best food street in the city — go hungry, go late

Chinatown's Petaling Street area has KL's best-value accommodation, a short monorail hop from the Golden Triangle
