The single most useful piece of Hawaii planning advice is one almost no first-time visitor follows: pick one island and stay on it for the entire trip. The state has 8 main islands; 4 of them welcome tourists at scale; and the inter-island flight, while only 30 minutes in the air, eats half a day with check-in and transfer. The islands are also genuinely different. O'ahu is the only urban Hawaii — Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, the world's most consequential surf scene on the North Shore. Maui has the best beaches outside fiction and the Hāna Highway road trip. The Big Island has active volcanoes (Kilauea has been periodically erupting since 1983), the world's most powerful astronomical observatories on Mauna Kea, and the most diverse ecosystems on a single island anywhere on earth (it has 8 of the world's 13 climate zones). Kauai is the dramatic one — Jurassic Park was filmed here for a reason. Pick the island that matches the trip you actually want, and don't try to do them all. Maui after the 2023 Lahaina fire is in active rebuilding mode; the rest of the island is open for visitors and your tourist dollars are explicitly welcome — but be respectful of fire-affected areas.
O'ahu: the most accessible and most visited — Honolulu, Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, and the North Shore (the world's most famous surfing destination, Banzai Pipeline). Maui: the best all-round island — Road to Hana, Haleakalā volcano at sunrise, Lahaina town, and the finest whale watching (November–April) in the USA. Big Island: the most geologically active — Kīlauea volcano (Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park), Mauna Kea stargazing, black sand beaches, and manta ray night dives. Kaua'i: the most dramatically beautiful — the Nā Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, and the most rugged landscapes in the archipelago.
TravelBuzzy Tips
First-timers: split 7 nights between O'ahu (3) and Maui (4) or go Big Island for something completely different
Inter-island flights are cheap and frequent — 40-minute hops make island-hopping easy
Do not rent a car on O'ahu in Honolulu — public transit and rideshare is more practical in the city
Hawaii is a year-round destination — temperatures range only between 24–31°C depending on season. April–May and September–November are the best shoulder months: fewer tourists, lower prices (20–30% less than peak), and still excellent weather. Peak summer (June–August) and Christmas (mid-December–January) are the most expensive and crowded periods. Winter (November–April) is whale season on Maui — humpbacks migrate from Alaska to Hawaii waters to breed, and viewing from shore or short boat trips is extraordinary.
TravelBuzzy Tips
Humpback whales on Maui: peak season January–March — a near-guaranteed sighting from Maalaea Harbor
North Shore O'ahu surf season (November–February) brings the world's biggest swells — Banzai Pipeline is unmissable
Mauna Kea summit (4,205m) in the Big Island is always cold — bring proper layers even in summer
Hawaiian plate lunch culture is the food DNA of the islands: a plate with rice, macaroni salad, and a main — kalua pork, laulau, or chicken katsu — for $12–16 at any local spot. Poke (marinated raw fish in a bowl) originated here and the best poke bowls bear no resemblance to the mainland US version. Shave ice (snow cone taken to a serious art form, with real fruit syrups, ice cream base, and mochi) is the essential Hawaiian sweet. The Hawaiian food truck and plate lunch culture is the best value eating on any island.
TravelBuzzy Tips
Poke at Foodland Farms or any local fish market costs $14–18 and is the best version you'll eat
Plate lunch at Rainbow Drive-In in Honolulu is a 70-year island institution — always a queue
Shave ice at Matsumoto's in Haleiwa (North Shore O'ahu) is the definitive version — go before 10am
Hawaii's outdoor activities are exceptional across all islands. Big Island: Kīlauea Caldera night glow (incredible), snorkelling with manta rays in Kona Bay (evening tour, $90–120), and Mauna Kea summit for stargazing (best telescope access in the Northern Hemisphere). Maui: Road to Hana (3-hour drive, 620 curves, 59 bridges, numerous waterfalls), Haleakalā sunrise (reserve 6 months ahead for sunrise viewing), and whale watching November–April. Kaua'i: Nā Pali Coast by zodiac boat (the most dramatic coastline in the USA, $150–200), and the Kalalau Trail (11 miles, permit required).
TravelBuzzy Tips
Haleakalā sunrise requires a reservation (Recreation.gov) — apply 60 days ahead, they sell out instantly
Manta ray night snorkel in Kona is guaranteed sightings (or refund) — one of the world's best wildlife encounters
Nā Pali Coast zodiac tour from Port Allen (Kaua'i south shore) gives the best views regardless of season
