Best Places to Travel in April 2026 — The Month Most Guides Treat as a Cherry Blossom Footnote
April is more than Tokyo in bloom. It's the first reliable beach month in the Mediterranean, the last cold-free month before summer crowds in most of Europe, and the month Marrakech finally gets its temperature right.
April has a specific identity problem in travel guides: it's either Cherry Blossom Japan or 'spring break in Cancún' and very little else. This framing misses what makes April genuinely useful — it's the month when the northern hemisphere tips decisively into warmth without having yet tipped into crowds. The Mediterranean season starts. The French Riviera comes alive. Scotland's hiking conditions peak. And in the Southern Hemisphere, Patagonia's autumn delivers the best foliage and wildlife conditions of the year.
Japan: Kyoto's cherry blossoms peak in April
While Tokyo's cherry blossoms typically peak in late March, Kyoto follows a week to ten days later — meaning April 5–15 is often the single best week for Kyoto's sakura. The Philosopher's Path (Tetsugaku no Michi) — a 2km canal walk lined with cherry trees — is the most photographed spring scene in Japan, and April timing lets you see it at full bloom. Maruyama Park, Kiyomizudera temple's surrounding hillside, and the Arashiyama bamboo grove's peripheral cherry trees are all at peak in this window. The trade-off is cost and booking pressure: hotels, ryokans, and popular restaurants should be booked 3–4 months ahead for this specific window.

Mediterranean: the first reliable beach month
April marks the start of genuine Mediterranean beach conditions. Santorini opens its summer infrastructure in April — the caldera sunsets are spectacular, the crowds haven't reached July levels, and accommodation is 25–30% below peak. Dubrovnik's Old City walls walk is fully operational and — crucially — the cruise ships haven't yet started daily docking. The Amalfi Coast's coastal road becomes drivable without July's convoy gridlock. Greece beyond the islands: the Peloponnese (Nafplio, Olympia, Monemvasia) is at its most accessible and photogenic with spring wildflowers and no tourist infrastructure strain. April Mediterranean water temperatures (18–19°C) are too cold for most casual swimmers but fine for divers and determined beach swimmers.
Editor's tips
- Santorini's Oia caldera viewpoint in April gets busy at sunset but is manageable — arrive 30 minutes early rather than the 90 minutes required in July
- The Amalfi Coast's SITA bus runs the full coastal road in April — share it with locals rather than tourist coaches
- Dubrovnik's walls walk ($35 admission) is best at 8am before the cruise ships arrive — they dock from around 10am
Morocco: April's perfect temperature window
Marrakech in April is the city at its most comfortable: 22–26°C during the day, cool evenings, and the last month before summer heat makes the souks genuinely uncomfortable. The Atlas Mountains visible from the city still carry snow on their highest peaks in early April. The Majorelle Garden has its most diverse spring planting. The Djemaa el-Fna square is fully operational from mid-afternoon without the summer exhaustion. The Jemaa-specific note: Ramadan typically falls in a different month than April in recent years (in 2026, check the Islamic calendar), but if it overlaps with your trip, restaurant hours change significantly — not a reason to avoid, but a reason to research.

Patagonia: autumn peak in the Southern Hemisphere
April in Chilean and Argentine Patagonia is late autumn — the lenga beech forests (ñire and lenga) turn gold, orange, and red across the torres and the Perito Moreno Glacier's surroundings. Torres del Paine in April has significantly fewer visitors than the November–February peak, the light is dramatic (lower sun angle), and the park's summer crowds at the W circuit huts have cleared. The trade-off: some infrastructure closes in April (refugios begin reduced hours, some boat services end). The weather is less predictable than in summer — expect wind, rain, and dramatic alternating sunshine. This is Patagonia's authentic mode, not its tourist-season version.

Frequently asked questions
Japan (Kyoto cherry blossoms, April 5–15 peak), the Mediterranean (Santorini, Amalfi, Dubrovnik — first reliable warm month without July crowds), Marrakech (last perfect temperature window before summer heat), and Patagonia (Southern Hemisphere autumn peak with autumn foliage and fewer tourists than summer).
April's travel value comes from its position between the school-holiday peaks: spring break (late March) has cleared in most European and US markets, and Easter (which varies across March–April) adds a brief price spike that subsides by mid-April. The destinations that work best in April are the ones that need warmth but not peak-season crowds — the Mediterranean at the start of its season, Japan at its cherry-blossom peak, and Patagonia at its autumn turning point. Book the Japan window by January. Book Mediterranean accommodation by February. Go to Patagonia whenever the Southern Hemisphere autumn calls.
